Black Newspapers History Month!... 'Newspaper Of The Week!'...The Colored Citizen (Kansas)!

Our 'Newspaper Of The Week'

is:

...The Colored Citizen!

Birthed in Fort Scott, Kansas by The

Honorable William Eagleson and his brother,

The Honorable James Eagleson, it was

entirely written and edited by them,

starting in 1878. It is unknown whose

printing press they used. The town of

Nicodemus, about five hours away from

Fort Scott, was incorporated in 1877,

and became the first all-Black town west

of the Mississippi using the Homestead

Act of 1862. The residents of the new

town were likely happy and anticipating

to see the new weekly paper arrive in their area!

However, because of difficulties in

their supply chain, they closed their doors in 1880.

Black Newspapers History Month was

founded by Ralph C. Winge, D.D.S.

in 2025 to acknowledge, praise, and respect

the Publishers, Editors, Reporters,

Typesetters, Secretaries, Agents,

Distributors, Newsstands, Paperboys,

and all of the the Team Members,

over the many decades, necessary

to produce and disseminate to Our

Black Beautiful Populations the needed

paper ( and now digital) instruments

to inform, inspire, and promote literacy,

so that Our People can make better

decisions, remember Our Great Histories,

to keep Our People up on current events,

to engage our populations to organize,

provide tips and methods to stay safe

in potentially-hostile environments,

and create mechanisms to construct

Our Enterprises for Our Outstanding Futures.

Black Newspapers History Month!... 'Newspaper Of The Week!'..The Gold Dollar!

Our 'Newspaper Of The Week'

is:

...The Gold Dollar!

The Honorable Reverend Jacob Fontaine, a Baptist Minister

Photo of acob Fontaine, editor of Austin's first black newspaper, The Gold Dollar

and entrepreneur, started Austin's first Beautiful

Black Newspaper in 1876. His paper would

offer to find relatives that were separated from the

brutal enslavement of Our Beautiful Black People,

while also giving 'moral instruction in raising

Our Children properly, so they won't be hung!'

Publication was stopped in 1880.
