The Honorable Danny Bakewell, Sr.,
his wife, The Honorable Aline Bakewell,
The Honorable Danny
Bakewell, Jr., and
The Honorable Pamela
Bakewell! They are
the current 'Big Four' leaders at the helm of the venerable
and Community-Loved Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper
which reaches almost 200,000 regular weekly readers!
The Bakewell family, who
are 'freeswinging, protective advocates'
of our Community,
also started the Brotherhood Crusade, Mothers in Action,
the National Black United
Fund, and many other valuable
and worthy efforts, purchased the paper in 2004 with the motto
"The voice of our community speaking for itself."
A year later, Danny Bakewell, Sr. started the 'Taste of Soul,'
the largest one-day
Crenshaw Blvd festival on the West Coast,
which is still going strong on
its 20th Anniversary in 2025, 'celebrating a taste of
diverse creativity!'
Founded by The Honorable Col. Leon H. Washington and his wife,
The Honorable Ruth Washington, in 1933,
the Los Angeles Sentinel, one of the oldest
Black-owned newspapers in the U. S., started
out as a free advertising-based paper called
the Eastside Shopper, and with newfound
success, about one year later, it changed to
the Los Angeles Sentinel, a subscription-based,
community news-based paper, and 'hit the
ground running' against stores that did not hire
Black potential employees with the slogan,
"Don't spend where you can't work," which,
among other neighborhood-supporting efforts,
helped it gain nationwide prominence.
1983 was the year that The Honorable Kenneth R. Thomas,
The Honorable Ruth's longtime attorney,
purchased the paper and kept her at the helm.
Three of the many talented
columnists at the paper include
The Honorable Dr. Maulana Karenga,
The Honorable Melina Abdullah,
and a past columnist, and my sister,
The Honorable Violette Peters.
This author praises the Los Angeles Sentinel
because they published news in 2011 about me
being the first Black Person to have a human
body part named for him...the Winge's Peak
(elatus labialis wingeulus)...a mid-upper-lip
prominence seen on many
people.
Also this author loves this newspaper
because they published the news of yours truly being
the first Black Person to invent and patent
a novel toothbrush, the Love ToothBrush!
The Los Angeles Sentinel was there for us,
fighting, engaging, and informing,
frame by frame, blow by blow and block by block,
when the massive L. A. Riots
of 1965 erupted!
And when Latasha Harlins
was murdered!...
And when Rodney King was
severely beaten and
almost killed! And one of The Honorable
Danny Bakewell, Sr.'s greatest moves,
(of which there are very many!),
to ensure the Community of Crenshaw's
intactness years and decades into the future,
he stood up, stood out, and forced
the Metro rail to
go underground and not tear up
the Historically-Black Crenshaw Blvd!...Bravo Forever, Sir!
